Che cos'è una ricerca WHOIS?

Il WHOIS è l'elenco pubblico di chi detiene un nome di dominio o un blocco di indirizzi IP. Una ricerca mostra il registrar presso cui è stato acquistato il dominio, quando è stato creato e quando scade, i suoi name server, i suoi codici di stato e un contatto abuse a cui segnalare spam o phishing. Per gli indirizzi IP mostra il proprietario della rete, l'intervallo di indirizzi e il Regional Internet Registry (ARIN, RIPE NCC, APNIC, LACNIC o AFRINIC) che lo ha assegnato.

RDAP: il WHOIS moderno

Questo strumento interroga il Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP), il successore strutturato in JSON del vecchio protocollo WHOIS testuale. Individuiamo il server autoritativo del registro per ogni TLD o intervallo IP a partire dai file di bootstrap della IANA, così i risultati arrivano direttamente dalla fonte. Per i pochi TLD nazionali che non offrono ancora RDAP, ricorriamo al classico WHOIS sulla porta 43.

Perché il nome del proprietario è nascosto?

Da quando il GDPR dell'UE è entrato in vigore a maggio 2018, i registrar oscurano per impostazione predefinita i dati personali degli intestatari privati, e molti offrono servizi di privacy gratuiti che fanno lo stesso per le aziende. Capire i codici di stato del dominio
