Merge Word Documents

Merge Word documents online: combine multiple DOCX files into a single document in the order you choose. Free, private, in your browser.

Files are processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Headings, paragraphs, bold/italic text, lists, tables and images are merged; advanced Word formatting such as styles, headers and footers is simplified.

How to merge Word documents

  1. Drop two or more .docx files onto the upload area, or click it to select them.
  2. Arrange the files in the order you want them to appear in the combined document.
  3. Leave Start each document on a new page ticked to insert a page break between files, or untick it to let them run on continuously.
  4. Click Merge documents and download the new .docx file.

Merging happens entirely in your browser. The documents are never uploaded or stored, so the tool is safe for reports, contracts and personal files.

When merging Word files is useful

Copying and pasting between documents is slow and often breaks formatting. A merge tool is quicker when you need to:

  • Combine chapters written as separate files into one manuscript or thesis.
  • Assemble a report from sections written by different colleagues.
  • Join meeting minutes, letters or forms into a single file for archiving.
  • Prepare one document that you then convert to PDF and send as a single attachment.

What is kept in the merged document

Each file is read, its content is extracted and a brand-new Word document is written containing everything in sequence. This approach keeps the content that matters most and produces a clean, consistent file:

Because the documents are rebuilt rather than stitched together byte by byte, advanced Word formatting is simplified. The text and structure arrive intact, but the merged file uses a uniform look instead of each source document's individual styles, headers and footers.

Tips for a clean result

  • Use Word's heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2 …) in the source files so headings are recognised and kept as headings. You can then generate a table of contents in Word after merging.
  • Only .docx files can be merged. Save older .doc files as .docx first.
  • Add headers, footers and page numbers last, in Word, once the merged document is complete.
  • Need a PDF? Convert the merged file with Word to PDF. If your files are already PDFs, use Merge PDF instead, which keeps the exact layout of each page.

Frequently asked questions

How many documents can I merge?

There is no fixed limit. Because processing happens on your device, very large batches or files with many high-resolution images depend on your browser's available memory.

Will the formatting be exactly the same?

Headings, paragraphs, bold and italic text, lists, tables and images are kept. Custom styles, headers and footers are simplified, so check the result and adjust the design in Word if needed.

Can I control where each document starts?

Yes. With Start each document on a new page enabled, every file begins on a fresh page. Disable it to place the documents directly after one another.
