How to convert PNG to ICO

  1. Drop a single image onto the upload area. PNG works best, but JPG, WebP and other image formats are accepted.
  2. Choose the Icon sizes:
    • 16, 32, 48 px (favicon) – the standard set for a website's favicon.ico.
    • 16–256 px (Windows icon) – adds 64, 128 and 256 px versions for desktop shortcuts and applications.
  3. Click Create .ico and download the icon file.

The icon is generated in your browser; your image is never uploaded or stored.

What is an ICO file?

ICO is the icon format used by Windows and by the original browser favicon standard. Unlike a PNG, a single .ico file is a container that holds several images of different sizes. The operating system or browser picks the best match for each situation: 16 px for a browser tab, 32 px for the taskbar or a bookmark, 48 px for desktop icons, and up to 256 px for large icon views.

This converter stores each size as a PNG-compressed image inside the ICO file. PNG-compressed icons keep full transparency and are much smaller than uncompressed bitmaps, and they are supported by all current browsers and by Windows since Windows Vista.

SizeWhere it is used
16 × 16Browser tabs, address bar, bookmarks
32 × 32Taskbar shortcuts, high-density browser tabs
48 × 48Windows desktop and site shortcuts
64–256Large icon views and high-resolution displays in Windows

Adding the favicon to your website

Upload favicon.ico to the root of your website. Browsers automatically look for /favicon.ico, but it is good practice to reference it explicitly in the <head> of your pages:

<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="any">

Many sites also provide a 180 × 180 px PNG as an apple-touch-icon for iPhone and iPad home screens. You can make one with Resize Image.

Tips for a sharp icon

  • Start with a square image at least 256 × 256 px, ideally 512 px. Non-square images do not fit the square icon format well.
  • Keep it simple. At 16 × 16 px fine details and small text disappear. A bold symbol or a single letter works best.
  • Use a transparent background (PNG) so the icon blends into light and dark browser themes.
  • Have a vector logo? Render it at a large size first with SVG to PNG, then convert it here.

Frequently asked questions

Which icon sizes should I choose for a website?

The 16, 32, 48 px set covers browser tabs, bookmarks and shortcuts and keeps the file small. Choose the 16–256 px set for Windows application or desktop icons.

Can I convert a JPG to ICO?

Yes. Any image your browser can open can be used, but JPG has no transparency, so the icon will have a solid background.

Is a PNG favicon enough on its own?

Modern browsers accept PNG and SVG favicons, but an ICO file in the site root remains the most compatible fallback for older browsers and tools that request /favicon.ico directly.
