How to unzip files online
- Drop a ZIP file onto the drop zone above, or click to choose one. The picker also accepts .jar, .apk and .epub files, which are ZIP containers under a different extension.
- If the archive is encrypted, type it into Password (only if the archive is encrypted). Leave the field empty for a normal ZIP.
- Click Unzip. Every file in the archive is listed with its full path, so you can see which folder it came from.
- Click Download next to the files you need. Download all (ZIP) bundles the extracted files back into a single archive, which is handy if you only wanted to strip a password or tidy up the contents.
Extraction happens in your browser with zip.js. The archive and any password you type stay on your device.
Opening ZIP files on your own device
Most operating systems can extract ordinary ZIPs without extra software, so it helps to know the built-in route as well:
- Windows – right-click the ZIP in File Explorer and choose "Extract All". Explorer handles unencrypted and ZipCrypto archives, but it cannot open ZIPs encrypted with AES-256.
- macOS – double-click the file and Archive Utility unpacks it into a folder next to the ZIP.
- Linux – most desktop file managers offer "Extract Here", and in a terminal
unzip archive.zipdoes the same. - iPhone and iPad – in the Files app, tap the ZIP and it expands into a folder in the same location.
- Android – file manager apps such as Files by Google can extract a ZIP from the Downloads folder.
An in-browser unzipper is most useful when those routes fail: an AES-encrypted ZIP on a Windows PC without 7-Zip, a work computer where you cannot install software, a Chromebook, or when you need one document out of a large archive without unpacking everything into your Downloads folder.
Things to know
- Folders that contain no files are not shown, because only files are listed and downloaded.
- ZIPs created on a Mac often include a
__MACOSX/folder and._files with Finder metadata. These are skipped automatically, so you only see the real files. - A wrong password produces an "Incorrect password." message. There is no way to recover or guess a forgotten password here.
- The whole archive is read into browser memory. Archives above roughly 700 MB are slow, and files larger than 2 GB are refused.
Tips
- Only need to check what is inside? ZIP Viewer lists names, sizes and dates and lets you download single files without extracting the rest.
- Got a RAR, 7Z, TAR.GZ or ISO instead? Use Archive Extractor, or the dedicated Extract RAR page.
- To keep the archive but drop its password permanently, Remove ZIP Password writes an unencrypted copy.
- To rename, delete or add files without fully unpacking, try Edit ZIP.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to unzip files on a website?
With this tool the ZIP is never uploaded. It is opened by JavaScript running in your own browser, so the contents are not sent to any server.
Why does Windows say my ZIP is invalid or ask for a password it rejects?
The archive is most likely encrypted with AES-256, which File Explorer does not support. Open it here with the password, or use 7-Zip or WinRAR.
Can I extract a password-protected RAR or 7Z here?
No. Only encrypted ZIP files can be opened in the browser. Unencrypted RAR and 7Z archives work with the Archive Extractor.
Why are some folders missing after extracting?
Empty folders contain no files, so there is nothing to list or download for them. Every folder that holds at least one file appears as part of that file's path.
