How to convert HEIC to JPG
- Drop your
.heicor.heifphotos onto the upload area. You can convert many at once. - Set the Quality slider. The default of 80 gives excellent results at a reasonable file size; use 90 or higher for printing.
- Click Convert to JPG and download your photos.
The photos are decoded and converted entirely in your browser. They are never uploaded to a server, which matters for personal pictures of family, documents and home.
What is HEIC?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's name for HEIF, the High Efficiency Image File Format. Since iOS 11, iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC by default when the camera is set to High Efficiency. The format compresses images with the same technology as HEVC (H.265) video, so a HEIC photo is typically around half the size of a JPG of similar quality.
The downside is compatibility. HEIC works smoothly inside Apple's ecosystem, but many Windows programs, Android apps, web upload forms, online shops and older photo editors cannot open it. Converting to JPG solves that, because JPG is the most widely supported photo format in existence.
HEIC vs JPG
| HEIC | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Smaller | Larger at the same quality |
| Compatibility | Apple devices; limited elsewhere | Practically every device, app and website |
| Transparency, multiple images | Supported by the format | Not supported |
| Web browsers | Very limited support | Universal |
Tips and limitations
- Large batches take time. HEIC decoding is computationally heavy and runs on your device, so converting dozens of high-resolution photos may take a while. Keep the tab open until it finishes.
- Metadata is not copied. The converted JPG does not include the original EXIF data such as camera settings and GPS location, which is good for privacy when sharing online.
- Want smaller files or other formats? The Image Converter also turns HEIC into PNG or WebP, and Resize Image can downscale HEIC photos while converting.
- Shoot JPG directly if you prefer: on an iPhone, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos will then be saved as JPG.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I open HEIC files on Windows?
Windows needs additional codecs to display HEIC images, and many apps do not support the format at all. Converting to JPG makes the photos open everywhere without installing anything.
Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?
JPG is a lossy format, but at quality 80 or higher the difference is not visible in normal viewing. The JPG file will usually be larger than the HEIC original.
Can I convert HEIC photos on my phone?
Yes. The converter runs in any modern mobile or desktop browser, although large batches are faster on a computer.
