How to convert WebP to PNG
- Drop one or more
.webpimages onto the upload area. - Click Convert to PNG. No quality setting is needed, because PNG is lossless.
- Download the PNG files, with any transparency intact.
Conversion takes place in your browser; the images are never uploaded or stored on a server.
WebP and PNG compared
WebP is Google's modern web image format. It can be lossy (like JPG) or lossless (like PNG), and in both modes it can store an alpha channel for transparency. Websites use it because it is smaller than both JPG and PNG, and every modern browser displays it.
PNG is the long-established lossless format for graphics. It is supported by virtually every image editor, office suite, design tool, game engine and operating system, and it is the standard choice whenever an image needs a transparent background.
| WebP | PNG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy or lossless | Lossless only |
| Transparency | Yes | Yes |
| File size | Smaller | Larger |
| Editing software support | Growing, but inconsistent | Universal |
Why convert WebP to PNG rather than JPG?
Choose PNG when the image has transparency or sharp graphics. Logos, icons, stickers, illustrations and product cut-outs downloaded from websites are often WebP with transparent backgrounds. Converting them to JPG would fill the background with white; PNG keeps every transparent and semi-transparent pixel exactly as it was.
PNG is also the better target when you plan to edit the image. Because PNG is lossless, you can crop, annotate and re-save as often as you like without introducing new compression artefacts. Typical uses:
- Placing a logo with a transparent background into a presentation or Word document.
- Opening a web graphic in an editor or design tool that does not import WebP.
- Using images as sprites or textures in apps and game engines that expect PNG.
- Archiving graphics in a format every program can read.
For ordinary photos without transparency, WebP to JPG gives much smaller files.
Things to know
- PNG files are larger. WebP compresses better, especially lossy WebP. A converted photo can be several times the size of the WebP.
- No quality is regained. If the WebP was lossy, the PNG is an exact copy of how it looks now, not of the original source.
- Animated WebP is converted to a single still PNG frame.
Frequently asked questions
Is transparency kept when converting WebP to PNG?
Yes. PNG supports a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas are preserved exactly.
Is the conversion lossless?
Yes. Each pixel of the decoded WebP is stored in the PNG without further compression loss.
Why is my PNG much larger than the WebP?
WebP uses more advanced compression, and lossy WebP discards detail to save space. PNG stores every pixel losslessly, which takes more bytes.
Can I convert multiple WebP files at once?
Yes. Select or drop as many files as you need and they are converted together.
