How to convert TIFF to JPG
- Drop your
.tifor.tifffiles onto the upload area. You can convert many at once. - Set the Quality slider. The default of 80 suits sharing and email; choose 90 or more for prints or further editing.
- Click Convert to JPG. Each image gets its own download button, and Download all saves everything in one ZIP archive.
TIFF files are decoded by UTIF.js and re-encoded as JPG on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and you do not need an account.
Why TIF files are hard to open
TIFF is a workhorse of scanning, photography, printing and publishing. It is lossless, it can carry very high bit depths and it can store several pages in one file, which is why scanners, fax software, document archives and professional cameras rely on it. Everyday software is less friendly: Safari is the only major browser that can display TIFF, many web forms refuse it, and a lossless scan can easily weigh 20–100 MB.
JPG is the opposite trade-off. It throws away detail the eye barely notices and in return produces files that are a fraction of the size and open on every phone, computer, website and messaging app.
TIFF vs JPG
| TIFF | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossless (LZW, Deflate, PackBits, CCITT) or none | Lossy |
| Typical file size | Very large | Small |
| Multiple pages | Supported | One image per file |
| Transparency | Supported | Not supported |
| Browsers and apps | Limited (Safari, specialist software) | Universal |
Multi-page TIFF files
When a TIFF contains several pages, every page is saved as its own JPG, named with the page number, for example scan-page-1.jpg, scan-page-2.jpg and so on. Use Download all to get them together in a ZIP file. If you would rather keep the pages together in one document, TIFF to PDF is the better choice.
Things to know
- Transparency becomes white, because JPG has no alpha channel. Use TIFF to PNG to keep transparent areas.
- Text scans with fine black lettering look crisper as PNG; JPG is ideal for photos and colour scans.
- Unusual variants such as some 16-bit or CMYK specialty TIFFs may not decode. Re-saving them as a standard TIFF usually fixes that.
- For even smaller files, run the JPGs through Compress Image.

Which TIFF compression types are supported?
Uncompressed, LZW, Deflate (ZIP), PackBits, CCITT Group 3 and Group 4 fax compression, and JPEG-in-TIFF.
