QR Code Generator

Make a free QR code for a link, Wi-Fi network, text, email, phone number, SMS or contact card, choose its colours and size, and download it as a PNG or SVG. Codes never expire and are created in your browser.

How to make a QR code

  1. Choose what the code should do: Link, Text, Wi-Fi, Email, Phone, SMS or Contact.
  2. Fill in the fields. The preview updates as you type, and Show the encoded text displays exactly what the code contains.
  3. Optionally change the Options: Error correction, PNG size, Quiet zone, Foreground and Background colours.
  4. Press Download PNG for screens and documents, Download SVG for print and design software, or Copy image to paste it straight into a chat or slide.
  5. Scan the result with your own phone before you print or share it.

Static QR codes never expire

This generator makes static QR codes: the link, text or Wi-Fi details are written directly into the black and white pattern. There is no redirect server in between, so the code works for as long as the destination exists, with no subscription or expiry date, and nothing is tracked: nobody counts scans or learns who scanned. Dynamic codes that offer scan statistics point to a provider's redirect address and stop working if that service closes. The trade-off is that a static code cannot be edited after printing, so check it first.

Privacy: the code is generated by JavaScript in your browser. Your links, Wi-Fi passwords and contact details are never sent to a server. Only your option choices (colours, size, error correction) are remembered on this device.

What each content type encodes

TypeFormat inside the codeWhat the phone does
Linkhttps://example.comOffers to open the page
Wi-FiWIFI:T:WPA;S:name;P:password;;Offers to join the network
Emailmailto: with subject and bodyOpens a new email
Phonetel:+442079460000Offers to call the number
SMSSMSTO:number:messageOpens a text message ready to send

In Wi-Fi codes the characters \ ; , : " are escaped with a backslash, so a password such as pa;ss is stored as pa\;ss and read back correctly. Text is encoded as UTF-8, so accents and non-Latin scripts work in modern scanner apps.

How error correction works

QR codes use Reed–Solomon error correction (also used on CDs): extra recovery data lets a scanner rebuild the content when part of the code is dirty, scratched or covered. The four levels restore roughly L 7%, M 15%, Q 25% and H 30% of the data. Higher levels make the code denser. M is a good default; choose Q or H for codes printed outdoors or on packaging, and L for long text on a clean screen.

The generator picks the smallest version that fits, from 1 (21 × 21 modules) to 40 (177 × 177, up to 2,953 bytes at level L). Shorter content gives a code that is easier to scan.

The quiet zone

The quiet zone is the empty border around the code. The QR code standard (ISO/IEC 18004) asks for a margin at least 4 modules wide so the scanner can find the three corner squares. Text or images touching the code are a common reason codes fail to scan.

Tips for printing

  • Size: about 2 × 2 cm (0.8 in) is a practical minimum for close-up scanning. A common rule of thumb is a code about one tenth as wide as the scanning distance, for example 10 cm for a poster read from 1 metre.
  • Contrast: keep a dark foreground on a light background. Many scanners cannot read light-on-dark (inverted) codes or pale colours; the tool warns you about both.
  • Format: SVG stays sharp at any size; for a PNG in print, choose 1024 px or more.
  • Test: scan the printed proof with two different phones before printing in bulk.

Frequently asked questions

Do these QR codes expire?

No. They are static codes with the content stored inside the pattern itself, so they work for as long as the link, network or number they contain is still valid. There is no account or subscription behind them.

Can I see how many people scanned my QR code?

Not with a static code. Scan counting needs a dynamic code that sends people through a tracking redirect first, which this tool deliberately does not do.

How do I make a QR code for my Wi-Fi?

Choose Wi-Fi, type the network name exactly as it appears on your devices (it is case-sensitive), pick the security type (WPA covers WPA2 and most WPA3 networks) and enter the password. Tick Hidden network if the network does not broadcast its name. Most iPhone and Android camera apps then offer to join when they scan it.

What size should a printed QR code be?

At least about 2 cm (0.8 in) across for close-up scanning, and roughly one tenth of the scanning distance for posters and signs. Use SVG or a large PNG so the edges stay sharp.

Can I use the codes commercially?

Yes, on products, menus, flyers and packaging, free of charge. QR Code is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE INCORPORATED.
