How to convert TIFF to PNG
- Drop one or more
.tifor.tifffiles onto the drop zone above. - Click Convert to PNG. There are no settings to adjust, because PNG is lossless.
- Download each PNG individually, or click Download all to get a ZIP archive.
Decoding with UTIF.js and PNG encoding both happen in your browser. Your images are never sent to a server, and the tool is free with no sign-up.
Lossless in, lossless out
TIFF and PNG are both lossless formats: every pixel is stored exactly. That makes TIFF to PNG the natural conversion when you cannot afford to lose detail, for example with scanned documents, line art, technical drawings, screenshots, maps or images you plan to edit further. Unlike a JPG conversion, there are no compression artefacts around text and sharp edges, and nothing is degraded if you save the file again later.
The difference between the two is compatibility. PNG opens in every browser, every operating system, every office suite and almost every website upload form. TIFF, despite being a standard in printing, publishing and archiving, is displayed natively only by Safari among the major browsers.
What is kept and what changes
- Transparency is preserved. If the TIFF has an alpha channel, the PNG keeps the transparent areas.
- Every page is converted. A multi-page TIFF produces one PNG per page, named
-page-1,-page-2and so on. - File size can go either way. PNG's compression is often better than uncompressed or PackBits TIFF, but a scan saved with CCITT Group 4 fax compression is extremely compact, and the PNG may be larger.
- Specialty TIFFs. Some 16-bit or CMYK files from prepress or scientific software may not decode. Re-save them as a standard RGB TIFF first.
PNG or another format?
| Output | Best for |
|---|---|
| PNG | Text scans, diagrams, graphics with transparency, further editing |
| JPG | Photos and colour scans where small files matter |
| WebP | Images for websites and apps |
| Keeping multi-page scans together as one document |
Frequently asked questions
Does converting TIFF to PNG lose quality?
No. Both formats are lossless, so the PNG contains exactly the same pixels as the TIFF page.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. PNG supports an alpha channel, so transparent regions in the TIFF stay transparent.
Can I convert a multi-page TIFF to PNG?
Yes. Each page becomes its own PNG file, and Download all bundles them in a ZIP.
Why is my PNG bigger than the TIFF?
Black-and-white fax and document scans often use CCITT compression, which is very efficient for that kind of image. PNG is a general-purpose format and cannot always match it.
