Get your CV past the applicant tracking system
Most large employers and recruitment agencies receive applications through an applicant tracking system (ATS) such as Workday, Taleo, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS or SmartRecruiters. The ATS turns your CV into plain text, files it into fields such as name, job titles, dates and skills, and lets recruiters search and rank candidates by keywords. A CV that the system cannot read, or that does not use the words in the job advert, can be overlooked even when you are a strong fit.
The ATS CV Checker shows you what the system sees: the text it can extract, the sections it recognises, your contact details, dates and the keywords from the job description that your CV covers or misses. You get a CV score out of 100 and a checklist of fixes, and nothing is uploaded.
Before you send your application, convert your CV with Word to PDF (or keep a .docx if the employer asks for Word), shrink large files with Compress PDF, and if an employer asks whether you used AI, check your cover letter with the AI CV Detector.
A quick checklist before you apply
- Use a simple one-column layout with standard headings: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills.
- Mirror the exact job title and the key skills from the job advert where they honestly apply.
- Put dates in a consistent format (for example "Mar 2022 – Present") and keep contact details in the body, not in a header or footer.
- Start bullet points with action verbs and add numbers: what you achieved, by how much, for whom.
- Send the file type the employer asks for, named clearly, for example
Firstname-Lastname-CV.pdf.
Frequently asked questions
What is an ATS-friendly CV?
A CV that applicant tracking systems can read correctly: plain text that can be selected, standard section headings, no important information in images, text boxes or headers, and the keywords from the job description.
Is my CV uploaded when I check it?
No. The ATS CV Checker and the AI CV Detector read your file inside your browser; nothing is sent to our server.
Should I send my CV as PDF or Word?
Modern ATS read both. Send what the employer asks for; if they do not say, a text-based PDF keeps your layout intact.
What is a good ATS score?
Aim for 80 or more out of 100 with the job description pasted in, and fix every red item in the checklist first.
